distill

Reduce clutter so the important things are easier to find.

On this page 3 sections

Use distill when an interface asks people to take in too much at once. It simplifies the page around the task: removing repetition, combining related elements, and keeping occasional options out of the way until they’re needed.

Try it

/impeccable distill the checkout page. Make reviewing and paying for the order the main focus. Keep gift options available.

Say what people need to do and what must remain. If the main task is unclear, Impeccable asks before making cuts.

How it works

Impeccable identifies what gets in the way of the main task, then simplifies it:

  • Remove repetition: cut duplicate information and decoration that adds no meaning.
  • Combine related elements: bring scattered controls or content into clearer groups.
  • Reveal options when needed: keep occasional choices available without showing everything at once.
  • Reduce unnecessary variation: make repeated elements look and behave consistently.

Illustrated example: gift options stay available in an expandable section. The order total and payment action remain visible. Try opening “Add a gift message.”

Keep what people need. Clear labels, visible interaction states, and information needed for a decision must survive the simplification.

Check what remains

Walk through the main task and any less common paths affected by the changes. Can someone still add the gift message, change a choice, and understand what happens next?

If everything belongs on the page but the arrangement is confusing, use layout. If you’re unsure what’s causing the clutter, start with critique. Once the simplification works, polish can refine the details.
